Riots Force Friendly Cancellation

The Football Association has confirmed England's friendly match against Netherlands on Wednesday has been called off.

Riots that began in Tottenham on Saturday night after a protest over a police shooting have spread throughout London - and indeed other parts of England - and a meeting between the FA and the Metropolitan Police took place on Tuesday morning to determine whether the match would go ahead.
An FA statement following the meeting read: "It is with regret that tomorrow's international fixture with Holland at Wembley has been called-off."
More than 70,000 tickets had been sold for the match and it would have required a significant police presence at a time when resources are severely stretched.
Rio Ferdinand backed the decision. "England vs Holland game is off, good call. Who wants to see a game of football when our country is in turmoil," he tweeted.
The FA is set to hold a press conference in Watford, Hertfordshire, at 1230 BST.
