Giggs Eyes 1000 Game Landmark

Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs is hopeful he can reach a landmark 1000 games for the club before he retires.

Giggs has made 904 appearances for United since making his debut for the club 22 years ago, a club record that will take some beating. The 38-year-old has revealed he is not considering retiring any time soon, however - with a four-figure milestone firmly in his thinking.

The former Wales international has played 20 of United's 30 Premier League matches so far this season, and agreed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford last month.

"It's nice to have played 900 games for Manchester United -- that's special," Giggs said, in a interview with Gazzetta Dello Sport. "But I don't look too far into the future - I just try and enjoy the moment and do my best.

"If it's to be 10 more games then so be it. If it's to be 100 more games then that would be great."

When asked what he plans to do when he does finally hang up his boots, Giggs acknowledged that he hoped to stay in the game in a coaching capacity - although he stopped short of suggesting he will look to manage the club he has represented for over two decades.

"At the moment I'm focused on playing but I will be involved in football afterwards," he said. "I've done my coaching badges and done all I can to prepare myself for life after football. "But to manage a team like Manchester United? [Pep] Guardiola's done it at Barcelona but even he was the coach of their 'B' team for a couple of years. He had a little bit of experience managing so we'll have to see.

"My goal when I was younger was to play for Manchester United just once. "But then after that you get greedy. You want to be in the team all the time. Then you want to score goals. Then you get really greedy - you want to win trophies and then you win more trophies.

"All these things have happened to me - I realised my dream and at 38 I'm still living my dream. You can't ask for much more."

With observers continuing to marvel at his fitness after so many years in the game, Giggs underlined how seriously he takes the job of keeping his body in peak condition - as well as the importance of adapting his style of play to cope with the things he can no longer do.

"Yoga has definitely helped me. It helps me with training because it gives me the flexibility and the strength to not only play games but train every day," he said. "I rarely miss a training session even if I do a little bit less than the younger players.

"You have to change your way of thinking. I was a quick player when I was younger but now I'm not as quick.

"So you have to use your intelligence and experience on the pitch to adapt your game and change your game - which I have done."

Giggs has won countless trophies during his time with United, including 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues, one Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup

Ferdinand Fit for Title Charge

Rio Ferdinand has confirmed he is fit for Manchester United's title run-in, and he warned rivals Manchester City that the champions can even afford to have off-days because somebody in the team is guaranteed to take responsibility.

Ferdinand came off with 16 minutes remaining in United's recent 1-0 home win against Fulham, a substitution that seemed unusual given the precarious nature of their lead. However, the England defender revealed he was only being protected by Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I came off with a stiff back, just as a precaution," Ferdinand said in the Daily Mirror. "But it's fine, there are no problems."

United were far from at their best against Fulham and were fortunate to escape a late penalty decision when Michael Carrick appeared to trip Danny Murphy. Neither Ryan Giggs nor Ferdinand are concerned by the shaky nature of victory though, insisting there is no anxiety in the air at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand claims less experienced title challengers, like City themselves, might be pressing the panic button in games where they are struggling for a breakthrough, but - as United proved at Norwich - the champions have a belief right until the final whistle that somebody will score.

"You've got to hold your nerve, but just as important as that, if not more important, is trusting each other," said the England defender. "You've got to trust in the fact that, if you're not going to create a chance, someone else is.

"Or if you're not going to put your head on the ball when it comes into the box or make that tackle, someone else is.

"Ideally, we'd like to have played better football [against Fulham], but it wasn't to be. But if teams are going to come to Old Trafford and frustrate us, as they have over the years, we know we're still going to create chances.

"We don't care what happens with them [City], it's about us. If we can remain calm and win all our games, we'll be successful. As long as we keep winning our games, that's all that matters. It [City's form] doesn't really play on our minds, to be honest.

"It happens every year and at this stage of the season we know what it takes. We've got comfort in the knowledge that we can create chances and remain calm.

"The crowd got a bit edgy at the end of the [Fulham] game, understandably. But if it's 0-0 after 88 minutes we still know we're going to create chances in the dying moments to win games and it's important to keep that in mind."

Dede Happy at Vasco

Vasco da Gama defender Dede has stressed that he is settled in Brazil for the time being despite speculation linking him with a move to Europe.

The likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Benfica have been mooted as potential suitors for Dede, 23, as his stock continues to rise in his native Brazil.

But the centre-back, whose current contract runs until December 2014, has no plans in the short-term to leave Vasco.

"I'm not ready [to move to Europe]," Dede told Lancenet. "When I am, I will say. Right now, I have to enjoy what is happening to me here. It's too early to leave.

"Brazilian football is making me grow [as a player], I feel like I can represent the national team well without having to leave Brazil."

Lindegaard Could Miss Rest of Season

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard is set to miss the title run-in after suffering an injury setback.

Lindegaard, 27, has been out of action since January after damaging ankle ligaments in a training session.

United expected the Dane to be missing for a month, but his return to fitness has been slow progress and his comeback is now firmly on hold while he works with the physios to improve the strength in his ankle.

There is no time frame on Lindegaard's rehabilitation and, with David De Gea coming into form after a shaky start to his United career, Sir Alex Ferguson is unlikely to rush back the man that joined from Norwegian side Aalesunds in January 2011.

Owen: I Still Have More to Offer

Michael Owen has not abandoned all hope of remaining at Manchester United beyond the end of this season and thinks he has plenty to offer once fit.

Owen, 32, has made only four appearances this term for the Red Devils, and none since November, as he battled to overcome a thigh problem. And though Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken optimistically about the impact Owen could have in the title run-in when he does return, his future beyond that is open to extreme doubt.

It was a surprise when Owen was offered an extension to his initial two-year deal last summer and with Danny Welbeck joining Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez as regular members of Ferguson's starting line-up, the striker's chances of playing more regularly appear remote.

Ambitious Championship outfit Brighton expressed an interest in January and there are bound to be plenty of suitors despite Owen's patchy fitness record. But he has not completely given up on United.

''I know what I want to do,'' he said. ''If you say certain things they can get misconstrued but I have not lost the passion to be playing more often.

''In life, you have to make hard decisions. I have made some good ones and some bad, but in general terms I am pretty proud of my career.

''I still think I have another two or three years but where that will be is a question that the manager would be better placed to answer. I am in exactly the same situation I was last year.''

There are some who claim Owen has wasted three valuable years of his career at United, where he was never likely to gain a regular place even if he had stayed fit. It is not something the forward regrets though.

''Regardless what happens, you will never hear me grumbling about the privilege of playing at a top club like Manchester United,'' said Owen. ''I have had some cracking moments. I have scored in cup finals, got the winner against Manchester City, scored a hat-trick in the Champions League and won the league.''

United Three Clear at The Top

Manchester United scrambled to victory against Fulham at Old Trafford to open up a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney's 28th goal of the season proved enough for the hosts.

Sir Alex Ferguson was clearly not impressed though and his side were nearly made to pay the ultimate price for their profligacy when Michael Carrick bundled Danny Murphy over in the box a minute from time but 27-year-old referee Michael Oliver waved away the penalty claims.

Having witnessed title rivals Manchester City drop points at Stoke on Saturday, Ferguson had gone for the jugular with his team selection.

Five offensive players and two naturally overlapping full-backs was a ploy designed to push Fulham onto the back foot, and so it did as Rooney and Ryan Giggs threatened the visitors' goal.

Fulham eventually emerged from their shells though and started to exploit the gaps being offered.

Mousa Dembele drove one effort wide after being invited to run at the United defence, then Clint Dempsey had a go.

The American is much more dangerous and as he set his curling shot for the corner, Fulham's 320-strong travelling support were ready to celebrate.

It was too good to be true though for a team that had only beaten United once away from home since 1959, and David De Gea made an acrobatic save.

From that moment on, the Red Devils exerted their customary pressure.

Their play was not fluent though. A long-range Danny Welbeck shot and a penalty appeal for handball against Stephen Kelly was the best they could muster until Rooney struck.

Ferguson: You Have to Admire City

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes you have to "admire" City, despite being embroiled in a battle of words with their Premier League title rivals this week.

On Friday, Ferguson hit back at comments from former City midfielder Patrick Vieira after the Frenchman questioned United's decision to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement.

Ferguson warned Roberto Mancini's side he has "plenty of ammunition" if they want to engage in mind games, highlighting Carlos Tevez's controversial return to the City side after a five-month absence.

And, after City went level on points with United at the top on Saturday, the Mirror quotes the Scot as saying: "Experience is important, no matter who you are. If you've been there before, it helps.

"It's not absolutely conclusive that it will apply this season because you've got to admire City.

"They've done exceptionally well and been top of the league for a long time. They've got us to go to the Etihad and they've not lost a game there.

"Individuals and teams can win games, but I think what is important now is how the temperament is - how they hold their nerve."

"What we've got to get used to and it's the same for every United and City fan is there's going to be big games involving the two teams for the next decade.

"It will be semi-finals and finals, whatever, because the two teams will be at the forefront."

Nasri Eyes Potential Title Decider

Samir Nasri wants Manchester United to carry on winning to set up a title showdown with Manchester City at the end of next month.

Nasri has struggled to fulfil his potential at times since a £24 million summer move from Arsenal. The France midfielder came good on Wednesday night though, finding the finish that allowed City to claim a thrilling comeback triumph over Chelsea.

It meant that with nine games left, the Blues are now a single point behind United, with everything pointing towards the Premier League title being decided at the Etihad Stadium on Monday, April 30, when Sir Alex Ferguson brings his men across town.

Those plans may be wrecked by unforeseen mishaps for either team, but Nasri does not think so. More importantly, he does not want it to happen.

''You know what, I hope they win all their games and that we win all of ours, so we can play a 'final' here,'' said Nasri. ''It would be fantastic for the fans, and for us as well.

''United will be there until the end - they have the experience, they have a manager who has won everything for 25 years. Even if I said I hope they will lose, sometimes you have to be realistic.

''They don't have any really difficult games and it's not good to lie; they will not lose seven of their last nine games. But what we did against Chelsea is a signal to United that we are here and we will be here until the end.''

A more consistent contribution from Nasri would help and, although Blues manager Roberto Mancini is not noted for his compassion, the midfielder admitted he responds to an arm around the shoulder.

''I am someone who works with love,'' he said. ''I like to have a dad with me, then I can give everything. That is what I am starting to feel here, that everyone is giving me the confidence - the owners and the manager.''

Even on Wednesday Mancini was grudging in his praise, claiming that Nasri needed to do more to prove he was the equal of such luminaries as brilliant Barcelona duo Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

''I don't know about that,'' said the former Marseille man. ''At the moment they are on top, and I am 24. I can't say I will be like Iniesta - it would be silly to say that. But I can do my own thing and if I have confidence I can get better.''

Ferdinand Aims Jibe at City Fans

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is eager to win the Premier League title - if only to stop Manchester City's fans from coming ''out of the woodwork''.

The Manchester clubs are locked in a battle for the trophy with United leading their cross-city rivals by a single point with nine games remaining.

City have not won a top-flight crown since 1968 and, after lifting the FA Cup last term, Ferdinand believes the blue half of Manchester has become more evident.

''Walking around in town, you see more and more blue shirts than you probably ever would have seen over the last 10 years,'' he told BBC Sport.

''Success sometimes brings people out of the woodwork. So fingers crossed we can delay that and make sure that we get this title sewn up this season.''

Vidic On Course for Pre-Season Return

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has confirmed he is on schedule to return in time to take part in the Red Devils' pre-season programme.

Vidic, 30, has not featured for United since suffering a serious knee injury during December's crucial Champions League group stage defeat away to FC Basel.

But the Serbia defender is confident he will be ready to return to training in July ahead of the 2012-13 season.

"It's going well," Vidic said of his rehabilitation on United's official website. "Obviously the projection was I would be ready for the next season. I am on schedule and will hopefully start training again in July.

"Much of stuff I'm doing in the gym I'm not looking forward to but it benefits me and at the moment it's not too bad."

In Vidic's absence, youngsters Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have filled the breach, and the United skipper has been impressed with his junior team-mates.

"I think they are doing very well," Vidic said. "If you look at their age and the expectation we have from them, it wasn't that high but they turned out to be important players for the team.

"They have great futures ahead of them and Evans is playing really well in the last few games."

For Vidic, though, the star performer this season has been Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia.

"He's a great player to play with,'' Vidic said. "First of all he's a team player who works hard for the team and makes a difference up front. He's done it so many times this season and it seems like he's made a step up and improved.

"I would say he is our best player this season. There are one or two others, like Wazza's had a great season and has scored a lot of goals. But Antonio has done really well. It's important he's fit and plays all the games because we need him at this time of the season.''

Vieira Said : Scholes Return Shows Weakness

Manchester City football development executive Patrick Vieira believes Manchester United's decision to recall Paul Scholes to the first-team picture in January is a sign that there is "a little bit of weakness" in the Premier League leaders' squad.

Scholes, 37, announced his retirement at the end of last season after United claimed their 19th league title, but made a dramatic U-turn in January - returning to the first-team and playing in 13 of the Red Devils' past 15 games.

The veteran midfielder has plugged the midfield gap left by long-term absentees Darren Fletcher and Anderson, and United have won all seven Premier League games he has started.

Vieira, who played against Scholes for Arsenal and City before retiring himself at the end of last season, admitted he has been impressed with the former England international's impact, but insists the need to call on a 37-year-old is proof that United lack strength in depth.

"Paul Scholes is a player that I really love and admire, one of the best English players of the last few years, and seeing him come back is good for him and for United," Vieira said.

"But for him to come back just shows a little bit of weakness in United, because they had to bring a player back who was 37.

"I think it shows that, in the next few years, it will be really difficult for United to cope with other teams because, with all the respect I have for Scholes, him coming back shows that they don't have talent in there to replace him.

"When you see United losing young players like Ravel Morrison and maybe Paul Pogba, they should be really worried because that wouldn't have happened in the past."

Hazard Focused Despite City Interest

Lille star Eden Hazard says he is keeping his focus despite Roberto Mancini heading to France to watch him in action on Sunday night.

Hazard, 21, is expected to move to the Premier League in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all expected to be among the bidders.

City stepped up their interest on Sunday as Mancini, along with assistant David Platt and chief football administration officer Brian Marwood, travelled to Lille to watch Hazard score one and set up the other three in a 4-0 victory over Valenciennes.

That followed Sir Alex Ferguson's visit to watch Hazard in action against Lyon earlier in March, but the Belgium international says he will not allow the transfer talk to distract him as third-placed Lille look to enjoy a strong conclusion to the season.

"Whether it's Alex Ferguson or Roberto Mancini there, I don't think about it," he told Canal +. "I knew that Roberto Mancini was there - the coach told me - but I wasn't thinking about that. I just try to play my game.

"We'll see what happens, but for the rest of the season I'll be concentrating on Lille."

Updated!! - Muamba still in "critical condition"

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba remains in a "critical condition" in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest during Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Muamba, 23, collapsed and was attended to on the pitch for several minutes before being taken to London's Chest Hospital, where he is still fighting for his life in the Heart Attack Centre.

On Sunday, the London Chest Hospital released a statement regarding the condition of the former England Under-21 international, who will remain in intensive care for at least the next 24 hours.

"Fabrice Muamba remains in a critical condition," the statement read. "Fabrice was admitted to the hospital yesterday evening after collapsing at White Hart Lane, where he sustained a cardiac arrest.

"Fabrice received prolonged resuscitation at the ground and on route to The London Chest Hospital, where his heart eventually started working.

"As is normal medical practice, Fabrice remains anaesthetised in intensive care and will be for at least 24 hours. His condition continues to be closely monitored by the cardiac specialists at the hospital."

Bolton manager Owen Coyle, who accompanied Muamba to the hospital on Saturday, said: "The next 24 hours are going to be absolutely crucial. We've obviously been inundated with people wishing him well and we hope that if everybody can pray strongly tonight that Fabrice is able to recover.

"It's very serious. There's no getting away from that. He's critically ill and God willing he makes it through."

Coyle later added: "Fabrice's family have asked me to pass on their thanks for the many, many kind messages of support from not only Bolton fans but also fans from clubs across the country and abroad.

"All our thoughts and prayers are for Fabrice and his family. The family would also like to thank the media for respecting their privacy at this time."

Meanwhile, Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has thanked fans from the worldwide footballing community and those who have showed their support and concern for Muamba.

He said in a statement on Bolton's website: "I know Fabrice's family have been overwhelmed by the huge outpouring of kindness, from people visiting the hospital to leave cards to those sending messages and emails.

"On behalf of our club, I would like to thank the Premier League, the FA and all the clubs who have been in touch to offer their support. This has extended worldwide with FIFA, UEFA and the global footballing family also.

"I would also like to offer our thanks and deep appreciation to all those at Tottenham Hotspur yesterday and Aston Villa for their understanding at this time. The staff at the London Chest Hospital have been nothing short of exceptional and I would like to thank them all at this on-going critical time.

"All BWFC fans who have contacted me personally or the club have been unbelievable. We aspire to be a family and all expressions of support are testimony to the reality of the family club we have at Bolton. I ask for everybody to keep Fabrice in their prayers and thoughts."

With the scores level at 1-1 with 41 minutes played during the match at Tottenham, Muamba collapsed near the halfway line. Paramedics spent six minutes trying to resuscitate the Bolton midfielder on the pitch before he was stretchered off amid applause from both sets of fans.

With players from both teams visibly distressed, referee Howard Webb took the players off and shortly afterwards it was confirmed the game would not continue.

Two of the Tottenham players who witnessed his collapse, Kyle Walker and Jermain Defoe, were among the first to send messages of support to Muamba.

Walker wrote: "Doesn't matter who you support. Doesn't matter if you aren't a football fan. Doesn't matter if you aren't religious. Pray for Fabrice Muamba."

Defoe added: "God willing he will pull through."

England midfielder Frank Lampard said: "We are all Wanderers tonight."

This is not the first time Bolton have been at the centre of such a terrible incident. In 2004, former Senegal international Khalilou Fadiga collapsed prior to a Carling Cup tie with Tottenham at the Reebok Stadium.

Fadiga had to be fitted with a defibrillator due to an irregular heartbeat and despite initial reservations, was eventually able to resume his career, although he never reached the levels he had been at previously.

Fergie: Title Race Will Go Down to Wire

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the Premier League title will not be decided until the very end of the season as Manchester United battle rivals City for the crown.

Ferguson's men have opened up a four-point gap on top of the table following their 5-0 thrashing of Wolves on Sunday.

City, meanwhile, face Chelsea on Wednesday evening in what could be a season-defining clash for both clubs. Regardless of the outcome, Ferguson says United are prepared to go the distance.

"I expect it to go to the wire, always hope for the best and expect the worst," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "There are only nine games left now, it is just a matter of games getting cut off one by one and hopefully we achieve what we want to achieve.

"What's significant today is it's reduced the goal difference by five goals and that's down to three now and it may make a difference at the end of the season."

After the impressive win at Molineux, Ferguson challenged City to match their feat this week, suggesting Chelsea under interim boss Roberto Di Matteo will pose stiff opposition to Roberto Mancini's side.

"[City] have a big game on Wednesday," said Ferguson. "Chelsea are back to form. It will be really interesting."

Berbatov Will Quit Man Utd - agent

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season, according to his agent Emil Danchev.

Berbatov, 31, has grown tired of life on the sidelines at Old Trafford and, despite the club taking up the option of a one-year extension to his contract, will now move on.

"I had three meetings with (United manager) Alex Ferguson," Danchev told Bulgarian media. "We should accept that he'll try to build a team for the next three or four years and Berbatov will not be part of this team.

"Ferguson wants to change the playing style, to implement more speed. I was pleased with United's position as they said they'll not oppose Berbatov's move in the summer."

Berbatov joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008 and was joint-top scorer in the Premier League last season, but has fallen behind the likes of Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez this campaign.

"Dimitar will most probably leave England but he doesn't want to move to the U.S., Japan, United Arab Emirates or championships like these," said Danchev.

A return to Bayer Leverkusen has been mooted, while big-spending PSG are also believed to be interested in his services.

De Gea: Fergie Demanding Perfect Ten

Sir Alex Ferguson has demanded that title-chasing Manchester United win all of their remaining Premier League games this season, goalkeeper David De Gea has revealed.

United want to wrap up the championship before the last day of the season and that means the manager Ferguson expects his team to beat neighbours and challengers Manchester City at Eastland's on April 30.

United were beaten 6-1 in the corresponding fixture at Old Trafford earlier this season and they will need to avenge that defeat if the Red Devils are to land their 20th league title.

United keeper De Gea said: "Mr Ferguson has insisted just one point could be decisive and we want to keep our destiny in our own hands. Success is down to us and we cannot fail.

"We have spoken in the dressing room and the numbers are clear. We want to win all our matches and try to make sure we clinch the title before the last day."

United will move four points clear at the top of the league if they beat relegation-threatened Wolves on Sunday, with second-placed City not playing Chelsea until Wednesday.

Having crashed out of the Champions League and subsequently the Europa League, the title is the only trophy now available for United to win.

"It is now our duty to maintain our lead in the Premier League until the end, De Gea told The Sun.

"Winning the title will help us forget the bitter taste of defeat in the other competitions so, from this weekend onwards, I want the fans to see the very best version of United."

Evra: We Lacked Desire

Patrice Evra has conceded that Manchester United do not deserve to continue in European competition this year and provided a brutally honest assessment of his team's performance.

Evra, 30, was part of Manchester United's side in both legs of the club's Europa League defeat to Athletic Bilbao, but believes the club's European woes have been a season-long concern.

"From the beginning it was a disaster, first in the Champions League, the Europa League now," said the France defender. "We have to tell the truth. We never played well and we are out.

"We never played with the same desire that we played in the league in Europe this year. We have to accept that. Maybe we were too confident at the beginning of the Champions League. We thought we would go through and we went out against Basle.

"It has been a bad year in Europe for Manchester United. We have to agree with that. You can see the difference. We have been more focused on the league. Now we have to win the league to save our season. If we don't, it will have been a really bad season.''

When pressed on the disappointment, the French defender was at a loss to explain his team's performance in continental competition. However, Evra was also quick to lavish praise on Athletic for their performance in the Round of 16 tie.

"I don't know why," said Evra. "If I had the answer it wouldn't have happened.

"We didn't start well in Europe this year and in the end we have gone out again. We have to be honest with ourselves, we don't deserve to be in the Champions League and the Europa League.''

"They played very well. They deserved to win both games and could have scored more goals. I give them a lot of credit. They can reach the final. They run everywhere. They have the right spirit, better than us. That is why they win.''

With Manchester United set for battle with Wolves on Sunday, the Red Devils have little time to dwell on their defeat before they return to the quest for Premier League supremacy.

Evra though, who has captained Manchester United in the absence of Nemanja Vidic this season, believes that his side will not suffer from the after-effects of a Europa League hangover in the domestic clash.

"Of course we can bounce back,'' said Evra. "I am not worried about the league because we have always done well.

"Now we are at the top of the league we don't want to be second. We have to focus on Wolves. It is a big game, a massive game. We have to make sure we win. A big club like Manchester United should be able to compete in every competition.''

Europa League Quarter Final 2012

Athletic Bilbao, conquerors of Manchester United, will face German side Schalke in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Athletic overcame Premier League leaders United over two legs in convincing fashion, with Marcelo Bielsa's men claiming a well-earned 5-3 aggregate triumph.

Sporting Lisbon, who held off Manchester City to clinch their place in the last eight, will play Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv.

Sporting were given a scare in their meeting with City on Thursday night when a late header from goalkeeper Joe Hart came close to nestling home, with another goal from Roberto Mancini's men enough to knock out the Portuguese club.

Athletic and Sporting could face each other in the semi-finals - their quarter-finals have been paired together.

Two other Spanish sides are also still in the Europa League - Atletico Madrid play Bundesliga side Hannover in one quarter-final with the winners facing the victors of the other between Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and Valencia.

The matchdays are:
Quarter-finals: March 29 and April 5.
Semi-finals: April 19 and April 26
Final (Bucharest): May 9

Milan Draw Holders Barcelona

AC Milan have been drawn to face holders Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League while Chelsea have been paired with Benfica.

Barca have lifted the trophy three times in the last six seasons, while Milan have been European champions seven times in total. The two teams met in the 1993-94 final of the same competition, with Milan running out resounding 4-0 winners.

Pep Guardiola's side will have home advantage in the second leg, and also in the semi-finals should they be victorious and will face the winner of the tie between Benfica and Chelsea.

Chelsea overturned a 3-1 first-leg deficit to knock out Napoli in order to reach the last eight of the competition while Benfica advanced from the last-16 by knocking out Zenit St Petersburg.

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho faces a trip to Cyprus after Real Madrid were paired with Apoel FC. If Real win, they would then meet the winners of Marseille and Bayern Munich, who hammered Basel 7-1 on aggregate in the last 16

That means the prospect of an all-Spanish Champions League final between giants Barcelona and Madrid exists.

The quarter-final first-leg ties will be played on March 27 & 28, with the return legs scheduled for April 3 & 4. The semis begin two weeks later on April 17 & 18, before a quick turnaround for the decisive encounters on April 24 & 25.

This year's Champions League final, which will be hosted in Munich, takes place on May 19.

Fergie Makes no Excuses as United Fall

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted his side were well and truly beaten after they were dumped out of the Europa League by Athletic Bilbao.

Only Wayne Rooney's late consolation prevented United suffering the worst two-legged European defeat in Ferguson's entire time as manager.

United have had a disappointing year in Europe, winning just three of their ten games in UEFA competition and suffered a hat-trick of losses for the first time since 2004.

It represents a startling fall from grace for a team that had reached three of the last four Champions League finals and Ferguson admitted he has some work to do to find out where it all went wrong.

"Trying to analyse this season against others is a bit difficult," he said. "There is a route in terms of some of the goals we have lost in these tournaments. They have been pretty poor. It has been a disappointing year."

However, having assumed the Premier League leadership last weekend and knowing they will open the gap on nearest challengers Manchester City to four points if they win at Wolves on Sunday, Ferguson realises this is no time to get too downhearted.

"Feeling sorry for myself is not an issue for me," he said. "There is a disappointment but analysing the performances is more important and we have an important game on Sunday."

Ferguson confirmed his decision to replace Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs in the second half was purely to keep them fresh for the trip to Molineux.

The Scot had long since abandoned any hope of reaching the quarter-finals as, trailing 3-2 from the first leg, United fell further behind thanks to Fernando Llorente's excellent volley before Oscar de Marcos doubled their lead in the second half.

Rooney's 27th goal of the season 10 minutes from time came far too late to have any effect on the overall outcome.

"I don't think we can complain at the result," Ferguson said. "In the second half in particular, Bilbao were the better team.

"Their first goal was a bad one for us to lose. You can't believe an English team would lose a goal like that to a long ball. Ours was too late to do anything about it."

Ferguson praised Athletic Bilbao for their performances over the two games and admitted he hoped they now went on to win the competition.

"Athletic could do very well," he said. "What we have seen, tonight and last Thursday, is a team whose workrate is higher than anyone I have seen in Europe.

"That takes you a long way but it is not just about their workrate. They have some fantastic qualities also.

"I would like to wish them well. I hope they do win it because it is a testament to the hard work they all put in, from their coach right through.

"They have created a cause. Such energy and determination to win football matches is an incredible thing to see. They deserve to win it."

Athletic coach Marcelo Bielsa said he was delighted with the victory but as English teams suffered more trauma in Europe, with only Chelsea's amazing victory over Napoli providing some respite, the South American refused to enter a debate about whether the British game is too insular.

"Victory against a team like Manchester United cannot be ignored," he said. "But I don't have any reason to think it has happened because English football is too insular."

Euro Exit for United

Wayne Rooney's 27th goal of the season proved to be little consolation for Manchester United as they crashed out of the Europa League with a 2-1 defeat at Athletic Bilbao - 5-3 on aggregate.

Yet again they were inferior to an outstanding Spanish outfit, who scored through Fernando Llorente and Oscar de Marcos either side of the interval.

Now Sir Alex Ferguson will discover what effect a second European exit in a single season has on his team, who look to open up a four-point gap on Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League by winning at Wolves on Sunday.

Having acknowledged how well the Basque outfit had played at Old Trafford seven days ago, Sir Alex Ferguson used the availability of Tom Cleverley to pack his midfield.

The idea was to stem Athletic's source of attacks and get support to lone striker Rooney as quickly as possible.

United did create a very early opening when Park Ji-sung sent Rooney running free.

But the striker opted to cross instead of shoot, no-one was up in support and from that moment, United's hopes took a nosedive.

Markel Susaeta's free-kick was deflected wide after Michael Carrick had fouled Ander Herrera, then Patrice Evra headed Javi Martinez's effort off the line.

The pressure was mounting and United survived a major scare when Llorente found Iker Muniain with a superb pass.

Chelsea Battle Through

Chelsea beat Napoli 5-4 on aggregate to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. A thrilling game ended 4-1 on the night in a tie that was only decided in extra-time by a thunderous strike from Branislav Ivanovic.

The west Londoners came into the return leg on the back of a 3-1 defeat in Italy and took a first-half lead through Didier Drogba.

Chelsea doubled their advantage two minutes into the second period thanks to a John Terry header, which would have been enough to put the home side through on away goals.

The tie turned back Napoli's way after Gokhan Inler netted eight minutes later, although Frank Lampard struck from the spot to force extra-time in which Ivanovic hit a 105th-minute winner.

With this win Chelsea the only team from England who still competed in the last quarter. Chelsea out as the sole representatives from England to continue the struggle to achieve the dream of becoming a champion for the first time.

Anderson Out for Five Weeks

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed midfielder Anderson will be out of action for between four and five weeks with a hamstring injury.

Injury-plagued Anderson made his return after two months out in the 3-2 first leg defeat against Bilbao last week, but complained about a tight hamstring and pain in his thigh after the match.

Now the former Porto midfielder faces a long lay-off, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson eager to avoid exacerbating the problem. United were overrun in midfield by Bilbao at Old Trafford and Ferguson had hoped to use Anderson to shore up his side as he seeks a result at the San Mames.

However, there was some good news for the United manager, as goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard returned to full training after damaging ankle ligaments last month.

Valencia Returns to United Squad

Antonio Valencia has returned to Manchester United's squad for Thursday's Europa League encounter with Athletic Bilbao, but Anderson, Nani and Phil Jones have not made the flight to Spain.

It has been reported that Anderson is set to miss the remainder of the campaign with a hamstring injury, although as yet, there has been no official confirmation from the Old Trafford outfit.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Nani had sat out Sunday's Premier League win over West Brom with "bruising" suffered during a training-ground knock, but the United boss pointedly avoided responding to an inquiry about the reason for Anderson's absence.

The return of Valencia is good news, though, with the winger having been in impressive form until he suffered a hamstring injury in Amsterdam four weeks ago.

As United have since assumed top spot in the Premier League, Ferguson is keen to have as many men as possible available for the run-in.

The Red Devils' 20-man travelling squad included teenager Paul Pogba, surely a further sign that the young French midfielder is ready to spurn the offer of a lucrative contract from Juventus.

Paul Scholes was there too, although whether the veteran starts is open to debate given United are 3-2 down after the home leg and face a trip to Wolves on Sunday in the Premier League.

Under the circumstances, there are plenty who think the game in Bilbao is one worth sacrificing, although Ashley Young is not one of them, even if United have never recovered from a home first-leg deficit in a European knockout game.

"It is unusual that we find ourselves in this position but there is a great team spirit here and everyone is full of confidence," the winger said. "Our form in general makes us believe we can score wherever we play.

"Our attacking play has been fantastic of late and we believe we can score the two goals we need."

On the two occasions they have attempted a comeback away from Old Trafford, against Bayern Munich in 2001 and AC Milan four years later, they have lost the away leg as well.

Indeed, it is a measure of the task United are facing that it is five seasons since they overturned a first leg deficit on home soil. That 7-1 annihilation of Roma has gone down in Red Devils folklore and victory on Thursday will achieve similar status.

"Our focus has not changed from the start of the season," Young said. "We want to win every competition we enter and the Europa League is no different. Bilbao were an impressive team last week.

"They were a very attacking team, had a good team shape and at times we found them hard to break down, but I am sure if we are on our game 100% we can go there and get the win we need."

As Ferguson noted last week, winning is one thing, doing it by two goals quite another. That is what United are likely to need though given the high-scoring nature of the first-leg, when Wayne Rooney scored twice, part of his overall 26-goal tally.

Not that Young has done too badly lately, bagging an impressive double in the win at Tottenham, then winning the penalty Rooney converted against West Brom at the weekend.

"It is nice to be contributing," he said. "As a winger you are there to get assists and goals and that is what I have been doing. Fingers crossed it can continue and we can keep winning."

Berbatov Set for Man Utd Exit

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Manchester United's record signing Dimitar Berbatov is set to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Berbatov, who cost £30.75 million from Tottenham in 2008, has found first-team places difficult to come by since being left out of the United squad for last season's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

And, on the eve of a last-16 Europa League second leg tie with Athletic Bilbao, Ferguson confirmed the Bulgarian striker is set to leave in the summer.

''His concern is not getting first-team football,'' said Ferguson. ''At 31, he is looking at first-team football. It is difficult for me to guarantee that so it could lead to him looking elsewhere.''

Berbatov's contract is due to expire in the summer, although rather than let the former Tottenham man leave for nothing at the end of the season, they will trigger a one-way clause to extend the deal for a further year.

That would mean United would get a fee for the player, who was linked with former club Bayer Leverkusen during the January transfer window.

However, the Red Devils hierarchy know they would get nothing like the mammoth sum they paid for the striker, whom Ferguson had such high hopes for when he arrived but has never quite managed to fulfil them, despite ending last season as the joint Golden Boot winner.

''We will be taking up the option on his contract but, having had chats with him, I understand he wants to get first-team football,'' added Ferguson. ''It is something we need to consider at the end of the season. For a player of his age and his ability it is disappointing for him that he is not getting first-team football.

''We will look at the end of the season but until then, he remains at United.''

Ferguson confirmed Berbatov is again set to miss out aginst Bilbao as United look to overturn a 3-2 deficit from last week's home encounter, saying: ''He could play tomorrow but I have good options in terms of front players with Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney.''

Hazard 'Excited' by Man Utd Link

Lille midfielder Eden Hazard, who looks set for a move to the Premier League this summer, has hinted that Manchester United would be his preferred destination.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was in the stands to watch the 21-year-old at the weekend as Lille went down 2-1 against Lyon, fuelling speculation the Scot could launch a bid in the coming months.

If Ferguson does, he is likely to face stiff competition from Tottenham, whose boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed he is keen on Hazard, and Arsenal, who have been linked with the Belgium international for a while.

But United are emerging as favourites to secure Hazard's signature following comments he made to the French press.

When asked if a move to Old Trafford would interest him, Hazard told La Voix du Nord: "Of course, this a club that excites anyone.

"For now my focus is on Lille but yes, it is a pleasure to be watched by one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best."

Hazard has scored 11 goals in 24 starts this season for Lille, who are third in Ligue 1, 11 points behind leaders PSG.

Anderson Could Miss Title Run-In

Manchester United midfielder Anderson is set to miss Thursday's Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao and could be sidelined for the Premier League title run-in with a damaged leg muscle.

Injury-plagued Anderson made his return after two months out in the 3-2 first leg defeat against Bilbao last week, but complained about a tight hamstring and pain in his thigh after the match.

United are still awaiting results of hospital scans but the former Porto midfielder faces a long lay-off, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson eager to avoid exacerbating the problem.

Ferguson Hails United Temperament

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned title rivals Manchester City that his team will not crack on the run-in.

After picking up just seven points from their last seven Premier League away games, City have now surrendered the initiative in the battle for domestic supremacy.

Even worse, City are facing the prospect of slipping four points behind their fiercest rivals, who visit relegation-threatened Wolves at the weekend, before they can do something about it in what promises to be tough encounter with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on March 21.

As Roy Hodgson pointed out following West Brom's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday, the Baggies dragged themselves out of the relegation zone and up to 11th with their form over the final ten games last season, so all is not lost for City just yet.

Still, Ferguson took the opportunity to remind the Blues what they probably already knew; Manchester United are not going to fold.

"We have that experience and it does help,'' Ferguson said. "We won't get nervous. Against West Brom we kept playing our football even at 1-0 when the fans were thinking 'just get us a second'. It didn't concern the players one bit. It is good to see that kind of temperament.''

It is the kind of attitude that is only built up through years of scrapping for major honours and United's significant advantage in a season when their squad has been decimated by injuries.

Nani and Anderson are the latest to succumb, although at least with the former, his present absence with an injury picked up on the training ground should not be long term.

Ferguson avoided a question about Anderson, which meant there was no opportunity to allay fears generated by rumours that the midfielder has picked up a hamstring problem that may, in a worst case scenario, end his season.

Yet the return of Tom Cleverley from his ankle injury means help is at hand, just as United have somehow kept a flow of goals from wider positions coming by having either Nani, Ashley Young or Antonio Valencia available even though Ferguson has rarely been able to choose from all three.

Valencia returns to training this week after picking up a hamstring injury nearly four weeks ago, whilst Young, who missed nearly two months with a knee injury, is starting to find top form again and was a clear man-of-the-match on Sunday.

Pogba Still Mulling Over United Future

Sir Alex Ferguson says that Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is still making his mind up over his future at the club, with Juventus set to pounce.

Pogba, 18, has been offered a new long-term contract at Old Trafford as his current deal ends in the summer. Reports suggested that he had already agreed a move to Juventus after growing tired of life in the reserves, but after making an appearance against West Brom at the weekend, Ferguson revealed he is still mulling his future over.

"The boy is still trying to make his mind up but he knows where he should be," Ferguson told MUTV. "He has shown again the potential he has got and he is a first-team player, there is no question about that."

Pogba was omitted from Ferguson's first-team plans in the recent Europa League home defeats by Ajax and Athletic Bilbao, but the France Under-19 international could be set for an extended run in the side as United look to maintain their one-point lead over rivals Man City at the top of the Premier League.

Rooney Sends Utd Top, Swans Stun City

Manchester United returned to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday after they strolled past ten-man West Brom and rivals Manchester City were surprisingly sunk by Swansea.

Manchester City failed a major test of their title credentials as they were beaten 1-0 by Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea should have been ahead after five minutes when they were awarded a penalty - but Scott Sinclair's effort was kept out brilliantly by a sprawling Joe Hart, who gave away the spot-kick by bringing down Wayne Routledge. City failed to respond to that scare, and did not register a shot on goal until the 23rd minute. Roberto Mancini, clearly irritated, took decisive action shortly before the break, making a tactical switch by hauling off Gareth Barry in favour of Sergio Aguero.

Mancini's tweak had no effect on the pattern of the match early in the second period, with Swansea keeping the ball shrewdly and hunting it down in a frenzied manner when possession was squandered. Chances were few and far between, yet it was the hosts who looked the more comfortable generally. City's simmering sense of frustration was tangible: as the match wore on, both Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli were involved in minor skirmishes on the field.

And with seven minutes remaining, the hosts found the goal they deserved. Wayne Routledge pounced on Stefan Savic's wayward pass, before crossing for an unmarked Luke Moore to nod in. City thought they had escaped when Micah Richards put the ball in the net in stoppage time - only for the assistant referee to rule it offside, relegating the Etihad outfit to second place.

Manchester United leapfrogged their great rivals thanks to a comfortable 2-0 triumph over West Brom at Old Trafford, sealed via a Wayne Rooney brace.

An attacking Manchester United side - Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck all in the starting XI - were nearly caught napping twice inside the opening 20 minutes, with West Brom left to rue the fact the chances fell to midfielder Keith Andrews. But United found a foothold as the half wore on, with Ashley Young at the heart of their best moves, and edged ahead on 36 minutes when Rooney got on the end of Hernandez's volleyed cross.

Hernandez and Welbeck were both unlucky not to double United's lead, before Baggies defender Jonas Olsson was given a second yellow card for a trip on the Mexico international. Soon after Olsson's dismissal, United killed the game off: Andrews brought down the influential Young in the box, and Rooney stroked the penalty home to send his side to the summit.

In the Sunday's final game Wigan remained rooted to the foot of the table after missing a hatful of chances in a 1-1 draw against Norwich at Carrow Road. A big win could have lifted the Latics out of the bottom three but instead they had to come from behind, with Victor Moses cancelling out Wes Hoolahan's opener.

Hoolahan struck after just ten minutes thanks to an error from Ali Al-Habsi. The Wigan keeper's poor clearance allowed Norwich a throw-in, which they took quickly, crossing immediately for Hoolahan to convert.

Norwich were by no means comfortable though, and Wigan almost levelled in fortunate circumstances when Emmerson Boyce's cross drifted onto John Ruddy's bar. Ruddy was then called into action early in the second half to deny James McCarthy when clean through.

An equaliser was the least Wigan deserved, and they got it thanks to a brilliant Shaun Maloney pass that allowed Moses to ride one tackle before rounding Ruddy. Substitute Mohamed Diame then should have won it with five minutes remaining, although Wigan were grateful to a world class Al-Habsi save at the other end as both teams pushed for a winner.

Berbatov: Not Playing is Painful

Dimitar Berbatov says sitting on the sidelines is painful but he insists he is primed and ready to help Manchester United in their quest to win yet another Premier League title.

Berbatov has featured in just ten league games this season, starting on only five occasions. The striker found the net against Stoke on January 31, but was not even on the bench for the win over former club Tottenham.

It marks a rapid fall for a player who was signed for a a club record £30.75million in 2008 but he maintains he is still fighting for his place.

"It's just about being ready,'' he told United Review. "We have a big squad and you know sometimes you are not going to play. It's sad and it's painful but you need to be strong and be prepared for when your team-mates need your help. We are a team and we want to win together.''

Despite his lack of appearances, Berbatov is still United's joint third top scorer with an overall tally of nine. That figures includes five in two games against Wigan and Blackburn just after Christmas.

"Every time I have played I think I have done well,'' he said. "I'm ready and waiting whenever the boss gives me a chance to show my quality and deliver. I want to do as much as I can to help us win the title.''

Berbatov will be hoping for some involvement in Sunday's Old Trafford encounter with West Brom. Leaders Manchester City play at Swansea at the same time and Sir Alex Ferguson has already noted Roberto Mancini's attempt at mind games, claiming United would win at Tottenham a day before the match was played.

Ferguson said: "We were better in the second half and ran out winners - just as Roberto Mancini said we would... welcome to the mind games, Roberto, by the way!''

Ferguson views that 3-1 triumph as "pivotal'' although he acknowledges there are a few twists and turns still to come. "I am pretty sure we will experience some hectic finishes this March, as the pace hots up with the finishing line in sight, but I think we can count on the players getting to grips with the situation.''

Fergie Gagged Over England Speculation

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the Premier League has told him to stop talking to the press about the vacant England manager's job.

As one of the most respected voices in English football, Ferguson's opinion on who should replace Fabio Capello has been regularly sought by journalists since his resignation last month.

The Scot has repeatedly offered his backing to Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, and suggested prior to last week's meeting between Spurs and United that it could be the last time he faced his friend.

Ahead of United's clash with Roy Hodgson's West Brom this weekend, Ferguson was asked for his view on the Englishman's credentials for the Three Lions job, but indicated that he was not allowed to pass comment.

"The Premier League has written to me asking me not to talk about the England manager's job,'' Ferguson said. "I don't know why.''
