DISAPPOINTING EUROS A LESSON FOR MARTIAL, SAYS DESCHAMPS

France coach Didier Deschamps believes Anthony Martial is a revitalised player after looking "exhausted" at Euro 2016.

Following a fine first season in the Premier League with Manchester United, in which he scored 11 goals in 31 appearances, Martial failed to have much of an impact on France's run to the final on home soil.

The 20-year-old played just 69 minutes across three matches, but opened the scoring in France's 3-1 friendly victory over Italy in Bari on Thursday for his first senior international goal.

And Deschamps, attempting to lead France's recovery after their final defeat to Portugal in July, reckons a refreshed Martial will learn lessons from his Euros disappointment.

"He was the first one who was not satisfied. I spoke with Anthony about this Euros," Deschamps said.

"He arrived there exhausted because he had a very long season. He's a young player, he has to go through moments like that.

"He was expecting more from the Euros and me too. But, the things were more difficult. He has to learn from this to progress.

"But as I said to him, I didn't forget what he did and what he is able to do. Now he begins a new season.

"I told him he will play the first half. When he's in such a physical condition and in this state of mind, he's always a danger for the opponent. It's a good thing."

BREAKING NEWS: ROONEY TO QUIT INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL AFTER WORLD CUP

Wayne Rooney has revealed he is set to retire from international football after the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

Rooney has retained the England captaincy under new manager Sam Allardyce and will lead the team against Slovakia in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

But the Manchester United forward has confirmed the next World Cup will be his international farewell, insisting his "mind is made up" that it is the right time to quit.

"Obviously i've been selected and I made my mind up before the Euros whether we did well or not that I'd continue so over the last few weeks I've had nothing to think about in terms of England," Rooney told a news conference on Tuesday.

"I've had a fantastic international career so far and played a lot of games and enjoyed every minute but at some point it's going to come to an end.

"I'm not old, I'm 30, and come Russia that'll be the time for me to say goodbye to international football.

"My mind is made up but it depends on Sam Allardyce, that'll be my last tournament if selected. There have been highs and lows but I'm a proud man."

MANCHESTER UNITED WANT TO KEEP ROJO, SAYS AGENT

Marcos Rojo's agent has revealed that Manchester United have rejected several offers for the Argentinian this transfer window.

Former Sporting CP defender Rojo arrived at Old Trafford in 2014 in a reported £14million deal, with then United manager Louis van Gaal having been impressed by his performances at the World Cup.

However, the 26-year-old, who has been linked with a switch to Valencia, is yet to feature in a Premier League game under Van Gaal's successor Jose Mourinho.

But despite Rojo seemingly being surplus to requirements, his representitive Carlos Goncalves has stated that United are not looking to let the player leave.

"Manchester United rejected several offers from England and from abroad to sell the player. Manchester United want him to stay," Goncalves told the Manchester Evening News.

Rojo has made 58 appearances for United – who face Pep Guardiola's Manchester City after the international break – in all competitions since his move from Portugal, scoring one goal.

MARTIAL NEEDS TO BE MORE CONSISTENT - DESCHAMPS

France coach Didier Deschamps has challenged Anthony Martial to show more consistency following his subdued start to the season with Manchester United.

Martial proved a rare bright note in a United side much-maligned for their style of play under Louis van Gaal last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals in his debut campaign after arriving from Monaco last September.

However, the 20-year-old has thus far struggled to hit those standards under new manager Jose Mourinho, failing to score in three league fixtures or the Community Shield victory over Leicester City, although he has tallied two assists.

Martial has now linked up with France as they prepare to move on from losing the Euro 2016 final to Portugal, with Les Bleus facing Italy in a friendly on Thursday before starting their World Cup qualifying campaign against Belarus five days later.

And Deschamps urged Martial to start showing his undoubted quality over a prolonged period of time.

"Anthony started the season very early. He's already played a lot in a system that is slightly different to ours," Deschamps said of Martial, who only started one of France's seven matches at Euro 2016.

"He needs to be more consistent, despite his qualities. He can make the difference in a game because he's a fast and powerful player who can score and assist. At this age, even if he has already proved a lot, he has to go through that stage. He has to maintain a certain level of performance for some weeks, some months.

"He's played a lot, he's the one who played the most last season and that's why he was a little unfit at the European Championship. He has a lot of qualities. I've already told him that so he is aware, but he must push himself a little harder sometimes.

"It's his state of mind. He's like that so he needs to battle a little with himself. He needs to get stronger in order to maintain his level on a long run."

'SPECIAL' RASHFORD WILL GET CHANCE - ROONEY

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has no doubt the "special" Marcus Rashford's chance at the club and with England will come.

Rashford has dropped down to England's Under-21 squad, while he seems set to have to wait for his chance at United.

When his opportunity came off the bench at Hull City on Saturday, the 18-year-old tapped in a dramatic late winner in a 1-0 victory.

Rooney, who set up the goal with a fine individual run, is confident Rashford will eventually get the chances he deserves.

"It was a big moment for him to go to the Euros and it's still important for his development to go and play with the under-21s," he said.

"It's important that he gets games because he hasn't played that much. I think it will be good for him.

"He knows that and he understands that and his time will come and he will get his chance for Manchester United and England."

Rashford burst onto the scene last season, scoring eight goals in 18 appearances in all competitions.

Rooney said his job, and that of his team-mates, was to try and keep the teenager grounded.

"We know he is a special talent, we saw it last season. He's a young lad and it's important not to get too carried away," he said.

"Sometimes it's hard to do that because he's such a talented player but we need, as players and team-mates, to try to guide him through it and let him focus on the football."

POGBA AMONG BEST FIVE PLAYERS IN THE WORLD - HERRERA

Ander Herrera feels Paul Pogba is one of the best five players in the world and is delighted with the midfielder's return to Manchester United.

The France international left Old Trafford for Juventus in 2012, but rejoined United this month for an initial fee of £89million.

Pogba played a key role in Juventus' Serie A hegemony in recent years and Herrera has hailed the 24-year-old's versatility.

"I think he's a top player, maybe one of the best five players in the world that we have with us so it's very important," Herrera told MUTV.

"He can recover the ball, he can shoot on goal, he can dribble and he can defend so he has everything. We are so lucky because we have him.

"When you think about the best players in the world they are very good but maybe they are very good at specific things. But Paul is good at everything so we are going to enjoy him.

"As a midfielder I will feel very good if I have the chance to play with him."

Pogba will make his second United debut in Friday's match versus Southampton after missing their opener against Bournemouth due to suspension.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 SOUTHAMPTON 0: IBRAHIMOVIC HITS BRACE ON POGBA DEBUT

Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his fine goal scoring start to his Manchester United career with a brace in a 2-0 Premier League win over Southampton at Old Trafford on Friday.

Paul Pogba - who played the full 90 minutes - also impressed on his second debut for the club after completing his world record transfer move from Juventus and missing Sunday's 3-1 win at Bournemouth through suspension.

Ibrahimovic put United into the lead after 36 minutes, the striker rising highest in the penalty area to thump in a header from Wayne Rooney's precise right wing cross.

After Dusan Tadic had a goal ruled out shortly after half-time, Ibrahimovic sealed the points from the penalty spot when Jordy Clasie brought down Luke Shaw in the box.

Anthony Martial missed a chance to pick out Ibrahimovic for his hat-trick, but Jose Mourinho's men closed out the match with ease in his first league home game.

Southampton had won 1-0 on their two previous visits to Old Trafford but they rarely threatened the United goal and their seven-match Premier League unbeaten run came to an end as Claude Puel continues to await his first win.

It was Pogba who had the first sight of goal after 12 minutes, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area lacked power and was comfortably saved by Fraser Forster.

Southampton were looking threatening on the break and Nathan Redmond ran clear of Eric Bailly only to hit his cross over the unmarked Dusan Tadic at the back post.

Shane Long flashed a shot into the side netting after 25 minutes, then Ibrahimovic hooked a bicycle kick just wide of the far post after superb play by Pogba and Juan Mata.

Tadic seized on a loose United pass to free Long, but the striker snatched at his effort and David de Gea saved easily, before Rooney's long-range shot was dealt with by Forster.

United made Southampton pay for wasting their chances after 36 minutes, with Ibrahimovic scoring his third goal for United in three games.

Antonio Valencia slipped in Rooney down the right wing and the United captain's cross was perfectly placed for Ibrahimovic to climb above Jose Fonte and power in an unstoppable header.

Southampton thought they had equalised shortly after half-time when Tadic flicked home a header, but he was adjudged to have fouled Bailly, and United then doubled their lead.

Clasie tripped Shaw in the box and Ibrahimovic stepped up to sweep the spot-kick home, sending Forster the wrong way.

Ibrahimovic then could have had his hat-trick but Martial failed to pick his fellow attacker out in the box, before the young France international wasted another presentable opening.

Despite failing to take advantage of a string of opportunities to add to the scoreline - including a late Pogba effort - Mourinho's men closed the match out with ease to extend their 100 per cent record.

IBRAHIMOVIC CONTINUES DEBUT SCORING RUN

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's long-range strike after 64 minute of Manchester United's Premier League opener at Bournemouth continued a remarkable record of debut goals for the Swedish star.

Ibrahimovic has now found the net on his maiden appearance in the Champions League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and the English top flight.

Back in September 2002, Ibrahimovic announced himself on the European stage with a double in Ajax's 2-1 Champions League group-stage win over Lyon.

After he left Ajax to join Juventus in 2004, he made in instant impact with the Serie A giants by rounding off the scoring in a 3-0 win at Brescia.

Ibrahimovic continued the trend in his solitary season at Barcelona as Sporting Gijon were beaten by the same scoreline at the Camp Nou.

The 35-year-old left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season having established himself as the French champions' all-time top scorer – a journey that began with a brace, concluded by a last-minute penalty as the capital club came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw at home to Llorient.

On Sunday, a week on from heading the winner in United's 2-1 triumph over Leicester City in the Community Shield at Wembley, Ibrahimovic illuminated the Vitality Stadium with a superb effort as Jose Mourinho's team cruised to a 3-1 win.

Eric Bailly Has Big Plans for His First Manchester United Season

Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho invested £30m in the Ivorian defender and it is paying off.

Eric Bailly is targeting a Premier League winner's medal to mark his debut campaign at Manchester United.

Jose Mourinho 's £30m defensive capture from Villarreal has been an instant hit at Old Trafford and has helped give the Reds stability and open the season with two wins against Bournemouth and Southampton.

And coming out on top in May is number one on the agenda.

“The object is to win the league,” says the Ivorian.

“We have this goal in mind. The ideal would be to continue this hard work and be one of the top clubs in the world and there is no reason why we shouldn't do that

"The main thing is we set ourselves very high goals and hopefully we will reach them. We can certainly say the intent is there to improve among all players. The will from the players and staff is there."

“Personally I want to make the most of the opportunity that has been given to me and to make the most of the manager Jose Mourinho's, great experience and professionalism.”

Bailly has settled in quickly at Old Trafford and immediately has enjoyed an off-field link up with United's world record buy Paul Pogba.

“Paul is a exceptional guy and one of best in world and it is great to have him as a pal in dressing room,” added Bailly.

“It's important that he is a happy person and that shines out. It is an extra bonus for me to have him as a pal.”
