Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has reportedly attracted the interest of MLS club Chicago Fire.The experienced defender is out of contract at Old Trafford next summer, with a new deal yet to be agreed, and has struggled with injuries for much of the past three seasons.
According to the Daily Mail, the Chicago side believe they can persuade Ferdinand to end his career in the United States, with Illinois's comparatively favourable tax rates enabling them to offer the 32-year-old a deal that would rival his current £120,000-a-week contract.
Ferdinand has made just six appearances for United this season after suffering an injury set-back against West Brom in August, and was not selected for Fabio Capello's England squad to face Montenegro on Friday.
On Tuesday, Ferdinand's United team-mate Danny Welbeck scoffed at suggestions that the defender had passed his prime, calling him a "Rolls-Royce of a defender".
"That's not for me to say, but we all know what capabilities Rio has got," Welbeck said, when asked if Ferdinand was nearing retirement. "He is a great reader of the game and to me he is like a Rolls-Royce of a defender.
"It is wrong to write him off because he is a great defender."
