Cleverley has gone from relative obscurity to one of the most talked about players in the Premier League in a matter of days. On Sunday morning, he had yet to make his competitive United debut. A few hours later, he was the toast of Old Trafford after climbing off the bench to help the club come from two goals down to beat Manchester City 3-2 in the Community Shield.
An England call up followed less than 24 hours later, although the friendly game with Netherlands has now been called off.
It has been a meteoric rise for the midfielder, but defender Evra feels the 21-year-old will take things in his stride.
"Tom is a fantastic player, and I hope this season he will get a lot of opportunities," Evra said. "In pre-season in America, he played some amazing games, particularly against Barcelona. In the second half [against City], you saw that he is not afraid. He had a lot of energy and we need a player like this."
Sir Alex Ferguson has been seeking out a replacement for Scholes and he could well have a diamond in his own squad.
"He's a quiet lad," Evra said. "He's a bit like Scholesy in that way. He never talks much, he just does his job on the pitch. He's a very private guy.
"Bringing young players through is what we do here. Players like Tom are the future. The boss is not afraid to give young players a chance. He knows they can help us to win more titles. That's the United way. It's always been like that. The boss never waits, or thinks it's too dangerous."
